I don't think there's any reason the Cardinals couldn't of offered Weaver a one year, 8 million dollar contract. They gave Kip Wells a one year, 4 million contract.
The last three years Kip Wells has been injured or has not pitched well.
3 reasons why Cardinals should of paid Weaver the money:
1. Innings eater (As of right now, we only have one in our rotation)
2. Gradual success with the Cardinals followed by his postseason success.
3. Had success in the National League in 2004 and 2005 with the Dodgers.
I'm tired of hearing about Jeff Weaver, but he's selfish and that's all there is to it. He's overpaid and I will enjoy it if he falters.
After all this crap with Boras, I think the Cards can almost forget about signing any of his clients. We may have problems with Reyes once his contract is up.

If Jeff Weaver got a 5 year contract worth 8 million a year he might be overpaid (5/40), but it was just a one year contract.
Jason Marquis got a 21 million dollar contract for three years.
Jeff Weaver is a World Series hero and will probably be an average pitcher next year.
In this market, eating innings and putting up average results is worth 8 million. In addition, he has shown that he can perform well under pressure in the playoffs.
1 year, 8 million seems like a fair contract to me.

* I think if the Cardinals could of re-signed Jeff Weaver this offseason he would of had some success in STL and therefore it wouldn't of been overpaying for him.
* I think that Seattle might of overpaid for him though. He was terrible last year in that division .
I just think Jeff Weaver would of been a good fit on the Cardinals this year and we should of gave him the money. I'll leave it at that.

Totally agree Ace, I wanted Weaver back. I guess I'm just annoyed he left the Cards.
It's really hard to overpay a guy on a one-year deal. Overpaid is 5/50 for Gil Meche, or 4/42 for Soup. It's not 1/8.3 for Jeff Weaver.
The $3M increment from the Cards' originial offer to what Weaver got from the M's is darn near peanuts. Had Boras properly presented the Cards' stance, I'd bet they would have matched the M's offer. We are not talking about a lot of incremental money.
Spiezio's comments sound like sour grapes. He sucked up there and he got cut. I am glad we have him, but why bother ragging on your former employer? It's all water under the bridge.

Whether he actually sucked or whether he wasn't given opportunity is anyone's guess; Spiezio believed the latter. He said in various statements that he'd only get 1 or 2 ABs a week, then go for a week without anything, then get a start the next week, then a pinch hit AB the next, etc. That's why he doesn't have a very favorable impression of his previous employer.

That's understandable, but regardless of the circumstances, it only makes him look bad to rag on them publicly a year and a half later--not that anyone in Seattle would listen anyway.
I don't have very good impressions of Seattle's front office myself. How many good players have they let go over the years? Griffey, Johnson, Freddy Garcia, Carlos Guillen. I'm sure there's been plenty of turnover in management, and various reasons for not re-signing people, but they seem to have a bad pattern going. They also got snookered by that 1 year of MVP production from Beltre.
