I know Redbirds love spreads to all corners of the world, but for those of us fortunate enough to live in St Louis, it would appear that our alternative weekly, the RFT, has been sold and all the staff laid off. Presumably the name will be retained for something, if just a paper full of adverts for local restaurants with an occasional puff piece in there, but this is it for the RFT we knew.
A lot of interesting articles, a lot of good journalism, and some rather boring reviews of places I could never afford to eat in. It did trend towards local gossip in recent years, and unfortunately is ending on something of a low note, but on the whole I'll be sad to see it go.
Do you have any favourite memories? If you don't live in St Louis, what's your alternative weekly like?

Man, The RFT was THE paper for me in the 90s. That's how you found out about all the cool shows and good new music. The personals were a TRIP, too! LOL

The RFT is where I discovered Matt Groenig, via his "Life in Hell" comic.
I also discovered Derf's "The City". I really liked his slant on things. (He-boobies and woo girls... ahhhh... good times)
Their concert listing was always a must-read for me. They covered a lot of venues, big and small.

That really sucks. I guess local journalism is really dead.

I wonder how longer the Post-Dispatch can hold out.
