Gifts for Bosses

I'll preface this by saying I've only worked at my current job since May, and that I really do like my boss. I work in a small department with only four people besides her. Because I also work for a government agency, all our salaries are public, so I know exactly how much she makes a year, and it's a lot.

Earlier this week, the receptionist asked if I would be willing to go in on a Christmas gift for my boss. I wanted to say no, but it's too small of an office to say no and I felt too new, so I caved.

Today, she told me we're each chipping in $25. That's more than I've spent on anybody's gift this year except for my wife.

I'm really not expecting my boss to get me anything, and I'd honestly prefer that to, say, a robot pencil sharpener. I just don't like the practice of giving a fairly significant amount of money to buy a gift for the most well-paid person.

If you're gonna buy a gift for your boss, you're doing it for brownie points. Don't dilute your brownie points by "chipping in" for a group gift. I noticed my new boss likes fancy scented candles, so I'm getting her a fancy scented candle I like from a company I know she's never heard of.


But I will also point out this will be the first time I've ever bought my boss a gift and feel kind of gross about it. She's worth high 8 figures. I'm not a natural suck up. Whatevs.

That's kind of where I am on this. I've never bought a gift for a boss either, and it feels really stupid to get something for a woman whose annual salary is like 4 times mine. I'm not saying she has to get me anything-- I'd really rather she didn't since I like my workplace feeling only like a workplace-- but if there is any gift giving, it should be giving down instead of up.

A slap on the butt and a "lookin' good toots" would be worth more than any monetary gift you can give. Think of the self-esteem boost!

I agree that workplace gifts should go down, not up.

However, in such a small office setting, you risk negative brownie points if you don't go along.
