Every Year is the Year of Star Trek

One thing about Enterprise; and I didn't appreciate it as much on the first watch through; but I really think T'Pol's journey is an interesting one. Don't want to do any spoilers but she has one of the more interesting character progressions of the cast, in my view.

There's a good moment in Civilization that comes up pretty quickly in the first season towards the end of the ep that can be directly compared to Admiral Holdo and Poe in The Last Jedi. I'm surprised no one has ever used that clip as an example of "this would never happen in star trek."

Voyager is very pure Trek.

Really? I feel the opposite. Voyager felt like the series where Star Trek became a setting, but the core was missing. It felt like just one damned thing after another to me. Viewed as just a space adventure series, it’s decent, but I feel like it’s lacking as Star Trek.

Enterprise is the better series, IMO.

I'd agree, but still did enjoy Voyager as a space adventure series and it does have some very high points. I would rank it behind both TNG (1) and DS9 (2).

Voyager did some fun stuff with inter-dimensionality and a lot with time travel and making first contact with lots of new races, some more advanced than any known in the alpha quadrant. It definitely doesn't have as many think pieces as TNG, maybe less the DS9 even. It's very plot-driven and does less noodling around with sci fi tropes.

I feel like the writers left a lot on the table by not giving Janeway a love interest. Both Picard and Sisko had them and the writers used those plots to develop Picard and Sisko beyond their role as captain. Janeway doesn't really get that. They give us a little bit of info about her past, but otherwise she's pretty much all business all the time.

You want more Fair Haven? I mean, they kinda tried. They also tried for Beverly Crusher in Sub Rosa with similar success. Male Sci-fi writers from the 90's writing love relationships from the vantage point of the woman is going to end up with... results... probably not the type anyone wants.

In their defense though, there is a problem. For the show they wanted to both (1) keep Voyager separate from the Alpha Quadrant, so no contact for a long time, and (2) they had Janeway in a prior relationship with Mark, presumably to give the character more backstory and depth and something to hope for and struggle with. So they're in a place where they either have Janeway be "unfaithful" in the earlier seasons OR they have contact with the AQ sooner. It's really a no win scenario. Plus in the later seasons, it's kind of truer to the character that Janeway didn't have a relationship. She couldn't move on until she spoke to Mark, and had sort of written that aspect of her life off. And then after she spoke to Mark it... makes sense she had trouble un-abandoning that aspect of her life after so many years of trying to ignore it.

Yeah, they wrote an out for Janeway to enter into relationships but never really let her have them. There was also the guy in that episode where the crew are all trapped in that brainwashed worker's prison and she moves in with her coworker. Great 2-part episode, btw.

But they don't even give her any hobbies or anything. She works and drinks coffee.

A lot of the early tech stuff was pretty cool, many people wish they doubled down on that for the show early on and gone with even older tech, laser cannons, etc - and I kind of agree with them. There are a lot of fun Enterprise callbacks in Star Trek Beyond which were nice to see.

Hmm. I don't disagree with any of this. I think what I'm saying is that the series having the constant, singular goal of getting home, provided a clarity and consistency to the series that lead to fewer misfires and experimentation. Way less duds.
