I accepted the other job on Friday. It was a difficult decision in many ways, but I think it was the right one.

I think you'll find that you made the right decision, especially given your children's ages. None of us are promised tomorrow. As long as your family has a roof over your heads and food on the table and a little spending money to enjoy some leisure time in each other's company, what else do you really need the money for?

Cherish that extra time because you can never get it back.

Thanks for the support y'all. I actually won't start the new gig until the end of January. We get end-of-year bonus checks, so I don't want to miss out on that. I'm also scheduled to chaperone a kid's week-long field trip in mid-January, so I'm going to use that as a gap week.

Along the lines of what 'zeus said, I feel incredibly fortunate to be in a spot where I can choose better balance. For way too many people it's not really feasible to make that same choice.

Congrats, Gashouse.

Shortly after discussing retirement plans with my manager, a significant promotional opportunity opened up. She told me that I would be a leading candidate and asked if I wanted to toss my hat into the ring. More money at the cost of pushing retirement to the right for at least a couple of years. I declined - at this point in life, time is significantly more important than money. Sure, it would've been nice to pad the retirement account but not worth the risk (we're not getting any younger...)

Yesterday the guy who is backfilling my current position accepted that job. Not thrilled about having to transition all over again to another person, but I'm very happy for him and have no second thoughts about my decision.
