As chairman of the team, Bill DeWitt Jr. understands Cardinals’ fans desires to see the club acquire elite talent. Referring to St. Louis’ pursuit of high-priced star Giancarlo Stanton as a “unique opportunity,” DeWitt shared his logic behind the team’s approach to managing payroll, particularly as it pertains to the idea that the new $1 billion television rights deal could lead to a spending spree.

“We obviously look at our revenue and how it matches up with our expenses,” DeWitt said. “We do have an increase in rights fees this coming year. We anticipated that a couple years ago. We did bump our payroll the last couple years beyond where it had been. Other teams are doing new rights deals, too, and I think if you look at our revenue historically and our payroll in terms of rank they pretty much track each other.”[/tweet]

I read it as Reed not being able to handle a heavy workload.

I highly doubt Mo wouldn't sign a guy simply cause he doesn't trust his own manager. That's just doesn't make sense.

Reed can and has handled a heavy workload though. The concern if any would be the mileage on his arm. Of course, they also used the workload excuse with Colome too, but he pitched just as much as Gregerson last year and obviously Gregerson has pitched more innings in his career.

They ran into some kind of puke point they didn't want to clear with Colome, I'm certain. He started following all those Cardinals accounts after several reports of interest, then nothing.

Trying to sound polite, aren't all teams spending less as a proportion of their revenue than they were, say, five years ago? So, to say they're at the same rank isn't to say they're spending more, or even spending the same proportion of their revenue. Might make a more cynical person suspect all the owners discussed how to best maximise their profits, informally of course.

If the Cards' models suggest that Reed could be a prime candidate for Tommy John surgery based on the
amount of innings he has already pitched, than eschewing him makes sense.

Fans are not dumb. If they continue hovering around or just above .500 and missing the playoffs, at some point fans will start to buy fewer tickets and buy less stuff. Eventually it will start to impact revenue and the value of the franchise. Then maybe ownership will reach a different kind of puke point. Or maybe the new TV deal will make up for any decline in revenue from ticket sales and that point is still a ways down the road.

ST. LOUIS -- Describing the Cardinals' 2018 roster as "strong" and "improved," principal owner Bill DeWitt Jr. suggested on Monday that the organization has wrapped up the bulk of its winter work.

"I don't really anticipate a major move between now and Spring Training," DeWitt said. "I think [president of baseball operations John Mozeliak] and [general manager Michael] Girsch did a good job of targeting certain players and getting things accomplished."

That's unacceptable to me as a fan given how the last two seasons have gone.

In what was supposed to be a big offseason to turn things around, they added a bat (which is good), a meh reliever, and a questionable starter.
