Giancarlo Stanton trade development: Source says #Marlins likely would accept offer of Panik, Beede and Shaw for Stanton alone -- if #SFGiants committed to paying at least $250 million of the $295 million left on Stanton’s contract. @MLB @MLBNetwork
We ABSOLUTELY should be able to beat the Giants offer if all we have to do is pick up at least $250M of Stanton's contract.
If the Marlins are willing to pick up nearly $50M in salary, then there's no reason Stanton shouldn't be a Cardinals (unless he just flat out rejects us).
GRRRR! I wanted to be first!

So, putting the pieces together. Let's read what's actually being reported instead of what we think is being reported:
Also... silence from the Cards, which is usually a good thing. I keep saying that we'll know this is over when we start hearing about the Cards checking in on other players.
Maybe that means exactly what it says: IF the Giants offered Panik, Beede and Shaw then the Giants would only have to take $250. Doesn't mean that's what's ACTUALLY been offered...Giancarlo Stanton trade development: Source says #Marlins likely would accept offer of Panik, Beede and Shaw for Stanton alone -- if #SFGiants committed to paying at least $250 million of the $295 million left on Stanton’s contract. @MLB @MLBNetwork
Last week I was told that's NOT the offer, and yeah. Panik alone is too much to give up if #sfgiants are assuming $250m. Naturally MIA would accept that offer.

Panik...as is Joe Panik?...the 2b for the giants?
he's TOO MUCH to give up, if the giants have to take on 250 mil of stanton salary?

I would not be too quick to dismiss it. Yes, that seems like a paltry return for someone of Stanton's caliber. But, that contract really is MASSIVE. There are legitimate questions about whether the Marlins will be able to get any kind of significant player return for Stanton if they demand that their trading partners assume a lot of cash.cardsfantx wrote:Panik...as is Joe Panik?...the 2b for the giants?

Cards rumors, after all, have centered around Alcantara... who profiles as a relief arm.
Lastly, Panik is a lot like Wong. Doesn't look great on paper, but there's a lot of value in being a consistent 2+ WAR infielder with upside. Those guys are not easy to acquire.

It's a paltry return, Brent.

I can't decide who to quote so I'll just add that while I'd love to see Yelich wearing the Cardinal uniform, him by himself is not something I'm interested. He'd be an improvement in many respects but I don't think he's nearly enough of an improvement to give up anything for UNLESS you get a legitimate slugger in the lineup as well.
I just don't think that what he would add to the lineup over what he would replace would make the Cardinals chances of making the playoffs any better at all even with the uncertainty that there is surrounding what any current player will even put up next year.
If the Cards lose out on Stanton, I'd be more than thrilled with the Cards grabbing both Yelich and Ozuna together though. Heck, my dream out of all of this would be Stanton and Yelich both coming to the Cards.

harper and machado will both most likely top 300 mil next offseason...and i'd rather have stanton than harper (love harper's game, but the dude is SO hard on his body; i don't see him aging well)
and then when trout comes up? watch out
contracts for superstars (which stanton is), are about to become mind boggling IMO, with revenues pouring in

Off the top of anyone's head, are Lester and Quintana better vs Lefties or Righties?
