Justified reminds me of a 70s/80s crime show with humor like Colombo, McCloud, Rockford Files, etc. Similar goofy characters and storylines.

Last year they straight up ripped off the UFO from Man Who Wasn't There. I think Noah Hawley was very influenced by weird Coen bros.
This is kind of why I object to the whole "Fargo" conceit. The goofiness of the northern midwest accent and stark winter landscapes is kind of a crutch. You can make a heavily Coen influenced series and not call it Fargo. Set it anywhere else. I don't know how good it would be without those crutches. It's like a celebrity tribute band at this point.
Disclaimer - I still like it.

Agree. It's repetitious, but I get a couple genuine laughs just about every episode. The "slave girls" thing a couple episodes back for example. Loved the LA episode, and I love Carrie Coon though that's partially due to The Leftovers where she's amazing. I can't say I've seen anything like David Thewlis' character before, though it feels like something Gary Oldman might have also come up with. Really enjoying him.thrill wrote:Last year they straight up ripped off the UFO from Man Who Wasn't There. I think Noah Hawley was very influenced by weird Coen bros.

This whole season* is deep in A Serious Man, most notably the seemingly unrelated opening sequence (A Serious Man had their dibbuk; this season had the Soviet thing) and the presence of Stuhlbarg. The backstory of White Trash Stussy is a gender-reversed Raising Arizona. And on and on and on.thrill wrote:Last year they straight up ripped off the UFO from Man Who Wasn't There. I don't know how I feel about it. I hated it when it was all Fargo nods, all the time. I like it more now that they're riffing on all kinds of random Coens stuff. But it definitely gets heavy handed at times.
*I haven't seen last night's episode yet

Maybe that scene comes back at some point to tie-in, but so far there's the heavy handed big bad wolf/Varga = unfettered capitalism run to it's ruthless conclusion they've been beating us over the head with. Maybe East Germany is the other side of that coin.JL21 wrote:This whole season* is deep in A Serious Man, most notably the seemingly unrelated opening sequence (A Serious Man had their dibbuk; this season had the Soviet thing) and the presence of Stuhlbarg.

This episode, which I hadn't seen either - is probably one of my favorite and also least Coen-y episodes of Fargo yet. I didn't spot one reference outside the fact that it's still Fargo. Repeating myself here, but David Thewlis is so enjoyable this season.JL21 wrote:This whole season* is deep in A Serious Man, most notably the seemingly unrelated opening sequence (A Serious Man had their dibbuk; this season had the Soviet thing) and the presence of Stuhlbarg. The beating perplexes me a little though.

Can't remember - does anyone else watch The Leftovers? It's been the best show on TV the past couple years, to my knowledge at least. I hesitate to recommend it, because it's so damn heavy. Especially the first season. It's a little depressing, but also really adventurous. I think Damon Lindelof scares some of thos those who know him from Lost. There's a touch of Lost DNA, but it's got a completely different set of goals and is so much better at reaching them. Only 2 episodes left before it's done.

Welp binged the 3rd and final season of Bloodline. The acting was really really good IMO, but this final season dragged on.
I think I agree with every bit of this review. GREAT acting, so-so plot.
