If you can wait until September, you'll miss the crowds and families fitting in summer vacays - or so I hear. then reservations in Yellowstone will be easier to come by, too. Plus fall colors.

Ideally that's what we do, but September is harvest. I'll work every day from Labor day to Thanksgiving.

Fur trapping was a lonely, horny occupation.

Ah, well, tent camping in the park is much easier than RV camping. Lots of options.

Help me out here, fellas. Pretty much all of my camping, backpacking, hiking, et al has taken place in the west. Mostly Arizona, California, Colorado, Washington, Montana, and Idaho.

I am being tempted by an offer from my employer to help open an office in Nashville. What kind of outdoor recreation opportunities am I looking at in a 3-hour radius? I've driven through SMNP when I was a kid, but that's about it.

4.5 hours to Asheville.
2 hours to Chattanooga (supposedly a great outdoor city).

Still, end of August before Labor Day may still see smaller crowds. My wife's a teacher and i'm forbidden from scheduling a vacation after mid-August, and some school districts start in mid-late August.
