i also seem to recall seeing a headline that had something to the effect of ad-blockers costing like, 22 billion for companies.

For the past two days, E! Online has been at war with a million irate teens. And as the battle winds up, we must conclude: The teens are winning.

It all began in the wake of Sunday night’s Teen Choice Awards, when Seija Rankin — a 30-something editor for the celebrity network — published a tongue-in-cheek listicle that spent a lot of real estate hating on the social media stars at the show. Maybe Rankin was joking and her jokes were bad; maybe Rankin was serious. In either case, she appeared shocked to see awards for Vine, YouTube and Twitter celebs, and — of several top social media stars — wrote only, “who is this?”

Both the “unknown” luminaries and their fans were, suffice it to say, upset about the debacle: In the day after the post published, many of YouTube’s top stars tweeted their complaints — to thousands of RTs from a peeved teen audience.

I think a lot of it is based on ad impressions, rather than ad clicks. An impression is just a view of an ad. Even if you're not buying anything, it's still a reminder that a product exists. I think that a lot of marketing targets people at a subconscious level. For example: if I see an ad for Windex, I don't suddenly get the urge to run out and buy some; however, the next time I need to buy window cleaner, "Windex" is a connotation/connection that immediately springs to mind. (Probably a bad example, I'm not sure I've ever seen a Windex ad.) Part of advertising is about drilling those connections into our brains. Or... that's the way I've always understood it, I could be completely wrong.

A lot of sites are starting to run targeted advertisements too. Let's say you're on Amazon looking at a pairs of shoes. You don't buy them, and instead navigate over to MLBTradeRumors.com. One of the advertisements you see could very well be an Amazon ad for the specific shoes you were looking at earlier. Advertisements are sometimes based on demographics, but this highly-targeted stuff is even more specific.

I mean, I understand where you're coming from. It's hard to believe advertisers spend this kind of money. But they keep pumping money into it, so obviously it must be working.

not to veer too off topic, but targeted advertising has reached a level of creepiness that cannot be ignored.

im always reminded of the time i was texting back and forth with my friend about playing tennis, then hopped on over to facebook (mobile) and there right in my newsfeed was an ad for tennis lessons

Kind of strange that someone at E is puzzled by the presence of YouTube stars at something called the Teen Choice awards.

I'm not sure where to post this, but there was another case of the police shooting an armed black man in St. Louis on Wednesday. It looks like it happened when the police were exercising a search warrant and the subject fled the residence and proceeded to point a gun at the police and wound up getting shot and killed.

Of course this was followed by protests and more looting in the area.

WTF is going on in St. Louis?!?!?! Does the black community no longer believe there are justifiable reasons for police to shoot and kill a black individual (because they surely aren't protesting when a white individual is shot and killed)?

Honestly, the straw has broken the camels back. I'm moving away from St. Louis.
