Didn't really think this warranted it's own thread, but basically, those of you with instagram/twitter and follow @FATJEW and @[expletive]Jerry (the expletive being FCK), please stop supporting them.

the WTF part is that they are profiting off stolen material, but in this day and age unfortunately that isn't the most WTF part. The most WTF part about this is that FATJEW has managed turn his schtick into some pretty lucrative deals including a modeling deal (gross) and podcast with apple music.

Yeah I don't get the whole social media/youtube star scene. Everybody tries to go viral and become a star by exploiting homeless people, lip syncing disney songs with the whole cute fam, narrating their video game playing, maybe I am just getting old but it's all wtf to me.

and don't even get me started on the couple that "vlogs" every day and the husband surprised the wife by telling her that she was pregnant! how crazy amirite??

As convenient/useful as the internet is, the annoying factor is quickly beginning to tip the scales the other direction.

It's amazing. I posted about this...somewhere on this forum before, I guess. But anyway, once I saw my six-year-old girl watching a You Tube video. It was about this tween girl, and she had a tween friend, but the tween friend was a mermaid. So the video is the mermaid girl in the pool or in the bathtub or whatnot, and the other girl's talking to her and such. It looked like what it was, I guess, which is what two middle-school white girls with too much time on their hands might do on the weekend.

It had 44 million views. 44 million freaking views.

I was going to make a crack about most of them being from Catholic Priests but then I realized that you were talking about middle school girls so... just general pedophiles.

So on the pedophile thing, it sounds like Jared from Subway is a disgusting scumbag who lost a lot of weight, made a ton of money, and then decided to look at videos of kids instead of getting with really attractive - and adult - gold diggers of whatever persuasion he was interested in.

I find it fascinating as well. Especially Twitch.tv. Twitch consists of -- as you alluded to -- people streaming themselves playing video games. I cannot fathom how watching someone play video games would be enjoyable* (go play games yourself!). The craziest part is that viewers of streams have the option to "pledge" monthly donations (e.g. $4.99 a month) in support of some of these people. Viewers can also donate "tips" (it's not uncommon at all to hear about a tip in the three-or-four figure range). There are a staggering number of people who make hundreds of thousands a dollars a year via ad revenue/tips/donations. It absolutely blows my mind.

I'm incredulous. It's hard for me to believe people make money doing Twitch/YouTube/etc. However, I guess you really only hear about the successful ones. I'm sure it's very comparable to starting a band or moving to Hollywood to become an actor. The vast majority will fail and barely stay afloat. Given how limited the requirements/qualifications are for making videos, the market has to be unbelievably saturated with people producing content.

The biggest thing with Twitch/YouTube for me is, let's say you become "successful", to the point that you're making enough to quit your job: how long does the gravy train last? Eventually your star will fade and you'll lose popularity. At that point, would you rather be a professional with 5-years experience, or a Twitch streamer with a skillset that has remained largely unchanged over the last 5 years? Long-term it seems like a bad idea, and the lifestyle sounds kind of unfulfilling. Perhaps it's just cynicism or sour grapes on my part though.

* the same argument could be applied to watching sports I guess, but with sports you're watching world-class athletes (Twitch is often times just generic, run-of-the-mill Average Joes). Plus, it's easy to pop in an immediately play a video game by yourself... coordinating a baseball game with 20 athletes isn't something that just spontaneously happens.
