"childhood health initiative" is a cynical euphemism for "child porn ring."

This has nothing to do with child porn. He was hired by the Cards to hack into the Astros database to spy on their nutritional guidelines.

The wife found a halibut recipe in one of our cookbooks, so I wound up getting some halibut at the grocery store.
Good Lord. I had no idea that halibut was so expensive. Safeway wanted $25/lb for that stuff. I got the frozen, which wasn't that much cheaper.

I went to a restaurant yesterday where the halibut special was $38.00. No thanks.Vidor wrote:The wife found a halibut recipe in one of our cookbooks, so I wound up getting some halibut at the grocery store.

Re: The Official WTF Thread
Restaurants do this thing where they are slaves to their food cost multipliers across the board. So let's say it's $22/lb, that's $1.40/oz and he needs to keep his food cost at 25%. 7oz x $1.40 x 4 = $39.20 is how he arrives at that number, which is off-putting, especially in a market like Louisville and as a fish special on a Monday night. Instead of charging a much more palatable $30 and clearing $20 each time towards the rest of your overhead and hopefully profit.sighyoung wrote:I went to a restaurant yesterday where the halibut special was $38.00. Option 1. The salad costs you $3 and you can put it on the plate for $15. Your food cost is an amazing 20% and you net $12.
Option 2. The steak that costs you $30 and you sell for $60. Your food cost is an abysmal 50% and you net $30.
Plenty of restaurant owners would seemingly prefer the first option. Anyway, your margins should progress and regress depending on whether it's a big ticket item or not and a lot of places don't do this.
