There's always going to be a team left out though. If u make it 8, who is the 8th team in? Its tough to make the case either tcu or Baylor are the best team in the nation...which is what the playoff is getting at.
I think you can legitimately make a case that a #5 team might be the best team in the country in any given year. Hell, the '83 Miami squad was #5 going into the bowls and came out national champs.
I don't think you can legitimately make a case that the #8 team is the best in the country.
Which might sound like I'm arguing in favor of 4, but really I'm agreeing. Make it 8. More than that and those teams really have no claim to being the best. But 5-8 would ensure that any team that deserves to be there will get their shot. This year, your 5-8 are TCU, Baylor, and the two MSUs.

There is a horse's ass at js online lamenting Bret bielema leaving Wisconsin and since I'm banned there I will post here. Bert bielema saw the writing on the wall that he had a couple of weak recruiting years and Ohio state/ urban meyer would not be on probation forever and jumped at an offer to make twice as much money. He never lost to Ohio st 59-0 but very well could have if he had stayed.

I'd posit that anyone beyond 4 has proven they doesn't deserve to be there. I think this year's TCU is probably the closest you can get to an example of a team that has a claim to being the best being left out.
I was cautiously optimistic about 4 in a vacuum (and it's exceeded those expectations dramatically), but the reason I wasn't crazy about it is because I knew everyone would be talking about 8 before we even finished the first season. Auto-bids for conference champs would negate the one thing the BCS (and now the playoff) really did to improve things - not just making every game matter, but making every game matter across multiple conferences (i.e. TCU and Baylor fans having reason to root for Ga Tech over FSU, which in an 8-team auto-bid playoff they'd have little if any reason to care about).
One thing that gets me is that it would have cost MU money had they won, if I'm not mistaken. It would have cost Wisconsin money to win, I believe. Iowa St for sure.
Each of the major 5 leagues gets $50million from the CFP plus $6million per playoff team + $4 million for teams in the Peach-Cotton-Orange-Fiesta + $2million travel expenses. What would cost them money?

Note, SI cover jinx is alive and well, one week it has Jonas Gray of Patriots on it's cover and this causes him to miss practice and be benched. Next week Melvin Gordon, on cover which is reason he fumbles and they lose 59-0.
