Re: Fifty years ago today
Radbird thanks for your account of the event. I know it was huge for my Grandparents and parents. Of course we are all Catholic and I've kind of jokingly said the holy trinity to my Grandpa was Jesus, Stan Musial, and JFK. All three had pictures in his living room.
My Grandpa owned a restaurant type place and when it happened he closed for the day and went home to tell Grandma. The kids all were let out of school and they all went to church. My Mom says the church was packed. There were people she'd never seen there before, people crying people praying, etc.
I just can't imagine.
One of my biggest fears of the Obama Presidency is that it would happen to him. We know people have tried. Sadly, I don't think it would be a big unifying thing. I think half the country would morn, and the other half dance in the streets. I just hope it never happens.

C.S. Lewis, author of the Chronicles of Narnia, also died on November 22, 1963.Vidor wrote:Aldous Huxley died! I'm sure it was front page news. After all, the man wrote "Brave New World".

Man, nearly a half hour after the shooting and Cronkite is still talking over that still "CBS News Bulletin" picture.

CBS has finally gotten on the air live. I wonder how many of those folks at the Trade Mart ate their lunches.

On the CBS News video, Cronkite just announced the official announcement that the president was dead, and then he got choked up. What an unbelievable time.

I wasn't around, but I remember what a great news man Cronkite was.

Re: Fifty years ago today
II went to Mom who was visiting with a friend in the kitchen or dining room and told her my shows weren't on TV. She went to go see and all I remember is the look on her and her friend's face. Then I distinctly remember my parents glued to the TV - it must have been on almost non-stop that weekend.
I was four. It's easily one of my earliest memories.

Back at work, back on with the computer, and fifty years ago CBS was running some kind of church service memorial mixed with what looks like an experimental theater performance.
Weird.
I wonder if the networks would suspend programming for as long as 24 hours if the president got killed these days. Probably not. When did regular programming return after 9/11?
