Cardinals prospect Stephen Piscotty batted .295/.355/.464 with 15 home runs, 11 stolen bases and a 46/37 K/BB ratio in 112 games this season between High-A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield.
It was an impressive first full season in the minors for Piscotty, whom the Cardinals selected with the No. 36 overall pick in the 2012 draft. The 22-year-old was assigned to the pitcher-friendly Florida State League (High-A) to open the season and batted .292/.348/.477 with 25 extra-base hits (nine home runs) in 63 games. Piscotty didn't skip a beat following a promotion to Double-A Springfield in late June, as he batted .299/.364/.446 with 15 extra-base hits, seven stolen bases and a 19/19 K/BB ratio in 49 games. Though he’s a mature hitter with a consistent approach and a knack for pounding the gaps, there is some doubt as to whether Piscotty will ever offer enough power to make him a serviceable corner outfielder. While his hit tool and overall consistency will help him get to the major leagues, possibly as early as late 2014, his development of over-the-fence pop will ultimately determine whether he becomes more than a fourth outfielder.

Does anyone know anything about his defense? Those kind of numbers across High A/AA as a 22 y/o do not exactly yell "4th outfielder." That looks like the makings of another Matt Carpenter.

He is said to have one of the best outfield arms in the system so thats good for a RF'er. His strike zone control and decent power are a very exciting combination in IMO. I think he could definitely hit like Craig with better defense which would be very valuable.

MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports that the Astros have hired Brent Strom as their pitching coach.
Houston reassigned former pitching coach Doug Brocail to a special assistant's role last week and it didn't take long for the club to settle on a replacement. Strom had been serving as the Cardinals' minor league pitching coordinator and is very familiar with Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow from the pair's years in St. Louis.
