Indiana cut down the nets last night...after losing to Ohio State...and backing into a share of the Big 10 title because Wisconsin and Michigan State also both lost on Sunday.

Happy enough with a share of Big Ten title, Indiana turns Senior Night into a sideshow

Cutting down the nets is kind of stupid, but come on - backing into? The W-L records are what they are, no matter what sequence the games are played in.

Pretty hard, IMO, to deny that at this point in time the only reason Indiana has a share of the conference title is because their closest pursuers lost VERY winnable games.

No doubt this is all moot if IU beats Michigan in Crisler this weekend, but IMO pioneer98 is spot-on about Indiana "backing into" a tie for the conference crown.

My Purdue degree comes with a healthy loathing of all things IU, and Clappy's bush-league behavior over the last few weeks (the flop-fests against MSU and Minny, and this latest Senior Night nonsense) reinforces my relief that this squamulous weenie isn't MY coach.

so if the cardinals clinched the playoffs by a team losing earlier in the day, and they end up losing that night, you don't think they should celebrate making it into the playoffs?

its a tradition that they cut down the nets after clinching a big 10 championship, yeah it sucks they lost the night they did it, but they still deserve it for having a great year.

I don't get it. Had they lost all their games early in the season and then come from behind to take (tie) the conference with the same record, there'd be no talk of backing into anything. But that's the weird way in which sports are discussed on this planet.

Apples to oranges--IU didn't clinch a playoff berth when they backed in.... in baseball terms, all they did was clinch a TIE for the division; if this were baseball, IU's "magic Number" would still be 1 to be division champs, and to have a guaranteed spot in the playoffs.

whaaaa? I've been watching B1G hoops since 1980, and I've NEVER heard or seen this "tradition" --in high school and college, you will often see teams cutting them down after winning a tournament championship ON THE COURT; not when others' losing merely means you will share a regular-season conference crown....

No doubt Iu has had a great year, and Clappy deserves kudos for being a helluva recruiter and cheerleader. But none of that obscures the fact that outside Bloomington, he's developed a reputation as a sore loser, and a bush-league weenie with the flopping, and this latest net-cutting absurdity.

IU has a chance to make this all moot -- by beating Michigan today, and owning the conference title for themselves--but all Clappy has done with this week's stupidity is brighten the bulls-eye on his team's collective back.

There is no doubt that perception plays a huge role here...you're correct that the wins (no matter how they are sequenced) are what's important, but HOW they are sequenced clearly impacts how a team is perceived. In the B1G this year, Iu was the clear front-runner (probably in terms of talent overall, and undoubtedly in terms of national buzz)...for them to get worked the way they did (home floor, sole possession of the title, Senior Day) hurts them significantly in terms of national raking, maybe even in terms of NCAA seeding...

It certainly is NOT a development for which you would cut down the nets!
