Unfortunately, people like that show up at City meetings all the time. They will oppose absolutely anything without any cause and take up 15-20 minutes of time arguing unsubstantiated 'facts'.

I one time had a client who wanted to open an office. Okay, no big deal. A little fixing up of an existing office building, a little additional parking and of course the necessary permits from the City and we are good to go! So we notify the public and the neighborhood this will be occuring in and go to the necessary meetings. There was one lady, who everyone knew, that opposed it. The reason she opposed it? My client had another office in another city. It was located in a large commercial complex. There were something like 75 other offices (CPAs, MRI clinics, brokers, realtors, dentists, psychologists, etc). Well....one of the psychologists on his website listed his specialties. THey included the normal stuff.... family therapy, marriage counseling, etc etc etc and one of the last things mentioned was something to do with homosexuality. Based on that she was claiming the business was going to attract pedophiles and homosexuals and all the bad words you can say.

I mean, I'm at this meeting to talk about physical layout, zoning, drainage, any adverse effects we might have on surrounding properties and ways to alleviate said effects, street improvements, etc..... Never in a million years did I dream I'd be ensuring the City that my client was not a pedophile. I swear to God some people are just clinically insane....and practicing law (yeah, this lady was a lawyer....go figure....though I think since then and maybe in no small part because of this incident she has since lost her license. I know she got a cease and desist (sp?) letter)

I think that might be my all time favorite dingbat. But, there have been many, many others. Hell, sometimes they're even sitting on the board.

I know what you're talking about. I used to have to supervise a person who ran a public forum sponsored by my university. Half the people who spoke just wanted to hear their voices bounce off the walls.
