I disagree. I don't think the line between Tebow Fans and Tebow Doubters is drawn on religion. Most of the legion of people using every mistake or flaw evidence of his eventual demise as an NFL QB are either annoyed an unconventional quarterback is succeeding or are entirely annoyed at the press, lavish praise and fanfare surrounding a QB before he ever started a game in the NFL.

The question then becomes; is part of his fanfare not only his faith but how vocal he is about it or was the fanfare being an unconventional QB who happened to win a Heisman? Note; Troy Smith was an unconventional QB and Heisman winner just a year before Tebow, won with a higher % of votes and was drafted in the 5th round with much less fanfare. Chris Weinke, Danny Wuerffel even Sam Bradford and Cam Newton won Heisman's and were drafted developed less fanfare than Tebow.

It's hard to not suggest part off the hysteria is his faith and I don't think asking how it would be if he were Jewish or Muslim or Atheist is an unfair thing to talk about. And can highlight some of the religious differences we have in this country outside of Tebow.

Is any of that really something that we haven't already known for centuries, though? Do we really need a Tebow example to confirm that America reacts differently to Muslims than we do to Christians? Like I said, I think it's a pointless article.

It's impossible to separate. Much of the backlash is based on the incessant hype Tebow gets, which is because he's incredibly popular. His religion is a huge reason he's incredibly popular. If Tebow were Muslim or Buddhist he wouldn't be as popular, people wouldn't be nearly as annoyed by him and his fans, and there wouldn't be Tebowmania making every game a definitive statement on his career.

I don't think asking that question is unfair, I think it's one with an incredibly obvious answer. The fact that it's wrapped up with a subtle holier-than-thou "shame on you" rhetoric filled with bad examples on top of the obvious question makes it a crummy piece of writing.

It's not just "reacting different to Muslims and Christians". Is Bradford a Christian? Troy Smith? Cam Newton? Danny Wuerffel? Matt Stafford? What's that...you don't know? But Christianity is an oppressed group if you ask Fox News. There's a "war on Christmas" in this country dammit!

Centuries? Barely. And things can't change with tiem? 60 years ago it was a huge deal we had a Catholic as president. 4 years ago it was huge we had a black man as a presidential candidate. Given all the hoopla surrounding Intelligent Design, abortion, gay marriage and the "war on Christmas" I think it's a very relevant topic. Especially if a journalist can reach a wider audience using football as a tie in.

Kind of fun to do the impossible isn't it?

There are Christians who are just as annoyed with Tebow as there are Jews who love him. The line between Tebow Lovers and Haters is not drawn on religion.

The crux of the article was "America would react differently if Tebow were Muslim".

My ponit is......... "duh". That's all I'm saying.

Who said it was? The magnitude of his popularity though, is very much a result of his faith.

Yes. Well since most articles are of the same ilk, I'll be sure to treat any future articles you offer as relevant and interesting with same respect and deference you have here.
What a stupid, pointless article.

Really?

OK. My opinion was that the article was pointless. If you disagree, then tell me what the relevance was.

“Saturday Night Live” lampooned Tebow’s fan-boy love for Jesus. In response, Pat Robertson has claimed that the skit demonstrates “anti-Christian bigotry.”
In 1996, Abdul-Rauf refused to stand for the national anthem at an NBA game. A religious storm followed.

Abdul-Rauf claimed in a 2010 interview with HoopsHype.com that “[a]fter the national anthem fiasco, nobody really wanted to touch me.” He played only three more seasons in the NBA before going overseas to play professionally. In that same interview, he discusses how his home in Mississippi was burned down just a few months prior to Sept. 11. He eventually left the state.
But even before his conviction, Ali was causing controversy. Sports Illustrated dubbed Ali the most hated athlete in the world in April 1966. In the same article, Ali’s faith was referred to as being a part of his “fanatically religious side.” Instead of being something to admire, his faith was inconceivable fanaticism.
Pointless in terms of Tim Tebow the QB? Maybe. But it goes beyond the fact that Tebow wouldn't be as popular as a Muslim. He'd probably be vilified. It doesn't bother you that nearly 80% of this country identify as Christian and Pat Robertson is claiming bigotry? That it's ok to vilify Muhammed Ali or Abdul-Rauf for their religious convictions but we should offer Tebow Worship?

If you think it's pointless or not worth discussing - that's fine. It's certainly your prerogative. But there's no need to be so dismissive because joce posted an article you didn't want to talk about.
