We have become trained to drive as if we are driving in some sort of unbreachable tube making us much more passive at driving than we should be.

I'm talking passive vs active not passive vs aggressive. I know we have plenty of aggressive drivers.
I certainly agree. Think about when you drove a car for the first time as a teenager--almost in awe of how the thing took off and stopped, how powerful it was in comparison to, say, the lawn tractor you were used to driving. Now we try to operate one while texting, scarfing down a sammich, shaving, and chugging a beer (that's just the morning commute).
All that said, I still don't know why we think we need 4000 pounds of steel to carry a 200 pound passenger each day. Pretty inefficient.
